Guns are spending 13 per cent more than last year on game shooting, a game shooting census has revealed – bringing their average spent to £5,691.
The Shooting Census 2014, conducted by Strutt & Parker for Guns on Pegs, reveals the demographics of game shooters: 96 per cent are male, 71 per cent are over 46 years old, and 43 per cent are prepared to travel more than 200 miles to a shoot.
The average bag size of a shoot is 124, with each peg costing £619 on average.
There’s an age divide in some aspects of the game day – 63 per cent of under-35s prefer to receive their birds in feather, while just 35 per cent of over-35s want the same.
Just 22 per cent of shoots offer advice on cartridges, while 45 per cent of guns would appreciate it; meanwhile, game shooters take just 1.4 shooting lessons a year on average, with 59 per cent of guns having no lessons at all.
A huge 89 per cent of guns do not take out cancellation insurance, while 8 per cent still admit their guns are uninsured.
