The government has defended the environmental and economic benefits of driven grouse shooting.
It responded to a petition started by Mark Avery to ban grouse shooting, which has garnered over 20,000 signatures via petition.parliament.uk. The government’s response has made clear that grouse shooting is recognised as a legitimate and positive pastime.
“When carried out in accordance with the law, grouse shooting for sport is a legitimate activity and in addition to its significant economic contribution, providing jobs and investment in some of our most remote areas, it can offer important benefits for wildlife and habitat conservation,” the response from DEFRA says. “However, we encourage all shoot managers, owners and their staff to follow best practice to reduce the chances of a conflict of interest with birds of prey.”
