The prevalence of companies using social media to advertise job vacancies or even flaunt new hires is increasing. It’s used primarily to supplement more traditional, paid means of advertising, rather than as the sole means of hiring, but it’s a trend that can’t be ignored, and many of the hires or positions vacant in this and recent editions of Movers and Shakers have first been publicised on Facebook or Twitter. Gun Trade News would be interested to learn how many of the people these companies end up hiring actually saw the job on Facebook – perhaps they would be willing to share.
The company that’s active online is York Guns, who, in between plugs for its products and ‘sock of the day’ pictures, used social media to announce the hire of admin temp Grant Foulds. The company also kept followers up to date on its in-the-pipeline new website, saying it will be live soon. We’re sure the wait is worth it.
Also announced online was Ronnie Sunshines’ appointment of Andy Furminger to the role of store co-ordinator at the Sunshines outlet in Berkhamsted. The retailer, last seen trying to go multiple by advertising for franchisees, is clearly looking to strengthen in other ways too, taking on Andy from a previous role at The Shooting Ground, Markyate. Sunshines also revealed plans to extend its opening hours to Sundays and late nights – now there’s a company that’s keen to take advantage of every opportunity.
Another organisation expanding its team is BASC, which saw Paul Dale join its firearms team alongside Bill Harriman and Mike Eveleigh. Paul, a former firearms licensing manager for Staffordshire and West Midlands police, said: “I am here to help BASC members who are trying to negotiate the often complicated licensing process. Different forces can apply different rules and standards. We want to ensure members are treated fairly and that they are complying with the law in their applications.” Bill Harriman added: “BASC is the only shooting organisation with an integral firearms team, and Paul’s arrival will enhance our capability to give top-quality service. He brings a wealth of firearms licensing expertise, which will be invaluable in our dealings with police firearms licensing departments.”
Edgar Brothers, meanwhile, has appointed internally, as Tim Hill takes on the role of Bushnell optics product manager, having worked as an area sales manager for the last two years. Tim said: “I am thrilled to be the brand representative and liaise directly with Bushnell, Edgar Brothers and retailers on technical data, sales and marketing initiatives.” And one of Edgar Brothers’ accounts, Hornady, appointed its first European pro staffer this month – Owen Beardsmore of Cervus UK is the man in question.
Another internal promotion has taken place on the continent: Thomas Preutenborbeck, perhaps a familiar name to some as a member of the IWA organisation team, takes on the mantle of director of exhibitions for IWA as well as the related events Enforce Tac, Evenord and Perimeter Protection. With 15 years’ experience at NürnbergMesse under his belt, he’s well placed to continue the success of retiring director Gabriele Hannwacker. Thomas said: “I have felt closely associated with the IWA sector for many years. I am looking forward to jointly shaping a successful future.”
And if all this talk of hiring and promotions has given you the taste for a new role in the shooting industry, try these on for size: the Countryside Alliance is looking for a membership development officer in the north, and William Powell is advertising for a Sporting Agent. Blaze Publishing is hiring, too, for sub-editors to join its editorial department and work across a number of niche titles including our successful shooting publications such as Sporting Rifle, Clay Shooting and Modern Gamekeeping.
