A petition has been raised to repeal the Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997, to legalise the ownership and use of .22 calibre Rimfire pistols for sporting purposes in the UK.

The e-petition has gained over 9,500 signatures and hopes to legalise target shooting in England, Scotland and Wales once more. After the Act was passed in 1997, prompted by concerns about handgun violence following the Dunblane massacre, target pistol shooting was banned in the UK, excluding Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Some have criticised the ban for prohibiting their sport; the 2012 GB Olympic shooting team were unable to train in Britain for the event and had to decamp abroad for their training.
