Recent issues surrounding incidents of cats being shot with airguns have led to a Home Office airgun review. However, the review has left shooters worried that further restrictions on airgun use in England and Wales would be “disproportionate” and “bad law”.
Scotland and Northern Ireland both have airgun licensing in place already, and organisations have warned that any review could be an excuse to roll it out in England and Wales. Jack Knott, Countryside Alliance campaigns manager, said: “Where there are measures that can be implemented to improve the safety of airgun use, within the existing legislation, then these should be supported. We do not believe that further legislation in this area in necessary at present.”
