GTN picks a selection of rimfire rifles that are ideal for pest control or target practice
CZ 457 Varmint
The new CZ 457 family is distinguished by its sophisticated modular design. With the quality, versatility, accuracy and straightforward operating system of the 455, the 457 comes with a host of new features including a new trigger mechanism, which allows the user to adjust the pull weight.
Another advantage is the notably reduced turning angle of the bolt handle (30 degrees less than previous CZ models). Thanks to this, the gun enjoys comfortable handling, even with a scope mounted, as well as the ability to fit scopes with large ocular bells at lower ring heights.
It also benefits from a right-side safety that disengages when pushed forward. The 457’s bolt can also be cycled when the safety is engaged. Quick-change interchangeable barrels are offered in .22 LR, .22 WMR and .17 HMR and all 457 models use M455 magazines.
T-Bolt Target Varmint
The T-Bolt Target Varmint threaded rifle has been especially designed for hunting vermin and pests from a hide. It comes with an added wooden Monte Carlo Varmint stock on the heavy threaded barrel that guarantees its accuracy. Both .17 HMR and .22LR calibres are available in two different barrel lengths.
Mounting bases for scopes are included in this model, which comes in a grey laminate with stainless steel barrels. The traditional look renews all the pleasure of shooting with a small calibre rifle.
The XT line of rimfire rifles from Marlin are suitable for target practice or small game. They come in a .22LR version, with a seven-round magazine, or a .17 HMR, with a four-round magazine. They have adjustable triggers with 3-6lb pull weight and a standard thumb safety as well as a trigger safety that must be fully depressed before a trigger pull is possible.
The 22″ sporter barrel has a blued finish and is threaded for a moderator. The rifle has an adjustable open rear sight, and ramp front sights. Its receiver is grooved for a scope mount, and drilled and tapped for scope bases. Synthetic and timber stocked versions are available.
Steyr Mannlicher Zephyr II
After a 46-year hiatus from the rimfire market, Steyr Mannlicher launched the second rifle under the Zephyr name. Available in .17 HMR, .22LR and .22 WMR, the Zephyr II has a 19.7″, matte black, tapered barrel and a European walnut stock with a pistol grip. A fish-scale pattern is engraved on the grip and the forend.
It is bolt action with a matte black, relatively low-profile bolt handle. It weighs in at 2.65kg, and measures 39.2″ long in total. It features a five-shot detachable magazine, single-stage trigger and tang safety.
