The GTN news round-up

These are the stories from the shooting industry you might have missed in the last few weeks…

Lawrie Bags BASC Award

Shotgun Coach Lawrie Stewart was labelled “inspiring” as he overcame strong competition to win BASC’s Shotgun Coach of the Year Awards at this year’s Midland Game Fair. Lawrie has been coaching for four years, and volunteers tirelessly on shooting lines, young shots days, live quarry days and ladies days.

Lawrie commented: “I would just like to thank everyone who has made it possible for me to be awarded the honour of being crowned BASC Shotgun Coach of the Year. I love all the coaches to bits and enjoy every moment of their company.”

A BASC statement described Lawrie as “a real professional with a sense of humour that is infectious, his charity alone has allowed the sport of shooting to grow.”

SLE Welcome Convergence Fund

Scottish Land & Estates welcomed the announcement of convergence funding. Following the announcement by the chancellor of the exchequer, Sajid Javid, that the UK Government intends to provide an extra £160 million for Scottish farmers, Stephen Young, Head of Policy at Scottish Land & Estates said: “The commitment from the Chancellor to address past discrepancies in the allocation of convergence funding is extremely welcome news for rural Scotland.

“We have been calling for this money to be returned to Scotland for too long now, and we are delighted to see this injustice has been rectified. Now it is vital that we start the discussion on how we can best invest in and reward land management throughout Scotland.”

Collins Nets Set Charity Donations

This shooting season, from 1 October to 20 December, Collins Nets will be raising money for the Country Food Trust through the sales of beater flags. 50p from every flag sold will be donated, which they hope will help to raise around £1,000 for the charity. Every £1 raised will supply one meal.
